PCSD Led Ocular Visit in Marilao-Meycauayan-Obando River System
The inter-agency small group, composed of representatives from DA-BFAR, DA-BAFPS, DOST-FNRI, DOST-ITDI, DENR-EMB Region III, Blacksmith Institute, UPLB and the PCSD Coordinating Secretariat visited the Marilao-Meycauayan-Obando River System (MMORS) last 29 May 2015. The visit was intended to have a firsthand observation of the state of the river system, which currently provides water for domestic, industrial and agricultural/aquaculture activities to a large population in Bulacan.
The group had a tour along the Meycauyan-Marilao River, surrounding small scale industries (e.g. tannery, goldsmelting, lead-acid battery recycling facility), and also visited the ongoing remediation study site of Blacksmith Institute in Nagbalon, Marilao and dumpsite in Caingin, Marilao. Representatives from BFAR and UPLB collected water and fish samples to validate the findings of Professor Marlo Mendoza on MMORS. According to his study, heavy metal pollution in MMORS has far exceeded national standards and has caused environmental degradation and significant human health problems.
The PCSD, in its 1Q meeting for 2015, agreed to create an inter-agency small group to formulate plan of action to address the worsening condition of waters in MMORS.
