Sustainable Development Networking Programme
SDNP is a catalytic initiative to kick-start networking in developing countries and help people share information and expertise relevant to sustainable development to better their lives.  Launched in 12 pilot countries in 1992 as one outgrowth of the Earth Summit, the SDNP currently offers assistance in establishing connectivity to national networks and the Internet, content aggregation and user training in 39 developing nations and 36 small island developing states (SIDSnet).


United Nations Sustainable Development - The Commission
The Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) was created in December 1992 to ensure effective follow-up of UNCED; to monitor and report on implementation of the Earth Summit agreements at the local, national, regional and international levels.

Columbia University's Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) works at the intersection of the social, natural, and information sciences. The center specializes in on-line data and information management, spatial data integration and training, and interdisciplinary research related to human interactions in the environment.

Environmental Budgeting
Local Environmental Budgeting is an instrument for environmental management initiated by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives. It's aim is to set up a system to coordinate the different environmental management instruments like indicators, impact assessments and quality targets.

Environmental Performance, Indicators and Outlooks
The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) uses indicators as a tool for performance evaluation and public information: Core Environmental Indicators cover major environmental issues; Sectoral Environmental Indicators focus on specific sectors e.g. transport, energy; and Key Environmental Indicators are drawn from the Core Set.

Environmental Sustainability Index
The Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) is a measure of overall progress towards environmental sustainability, developed for 142 countries. The ESI permits cross-national comparisons of environmental progress in a systematic and quantitative fashion. It represents a first step towards a more analytically driven approach to environmental decision making.

Genuine Progress Indicator
Redefining Progress created a more accurate measure of progress which starts with the same accounting framework as the GDP, but then makes some crucial distinctions - It adds in the economic contributions of household and volunteer work, but subtracts factors such as crime, pollution, and family breakdown.

IISDnet Measurement and Indicators for Sustainable Development
International Institute for Sustainable Development has been working on measurements and indicators since 1995, with the aim of making significant local, national and international contributions, and of building the Institute into a world centre of expertise in this field.

Indicators of Community Sustainability

DEYNA Project - Model for Local Agenda 21
DEYNA made a Guide or field note-book to produce the Agendas in 1995 and published it in 1997. This guide has been given out to the 183 municipalities of Soria, Spain and has been extensively divulged outside this region. It was presented by the EEB of Brussels at the ICLEI Conference of Stockholm (1997) and is today in the hands of UNESCO, the Worldwatch Institute of Washington, PNUMA, the Spanish Universities and Ministries.
