3rd Quarter PCSD Meeting Held
The Philippine Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) in its meeting last Friday approved the proposed next steps for putting into action the commitments made during the Rio + 20 Summit held last 20-22 June in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The post-Rio activities of the PCSD involves the: contextualization of sustainable development (SD), green economy/green growth in the Philippine setting focusing on the three main areas of concern, namely, poverty and inequity, the economy’s lack of the capacity to generate high quality jobs, and environmental and ecological and degradation; mainstreaming of SD in policy and planning process, including the identification of proper unit of analysis and data management for planning and management; determination of priorities, thrusts and activities, including a list of SD indicators; and formulation of an action plan. The action plan once drafted will be the agenda of the next meeting.
Also discussed and approved was the proposed conduct of an ex-ante assessment or cost-benefit analysis of the mix policy responses to aerial spraying. The study shall consider the environmental, health, economic and social impacts of aerial spraying on the farmers and communities.
The PCSD was chaired by Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan. Joining him in the meeting were DDG Margarita R. Songco; Director Sheila Marie M. Encabo; other PSCD members which include Climate Change Commissioner Heherson Alvarez, Dr. Corazon PB. Claudio of the MAP-ESDC, Ms. Divina Luz Lopez and Pastor Delbert Rice of CSCCSD, Dr. Sixto K. Roxas of the MTK Institute for SD; PCSD committee and sub-committee chairs which include DENR USec. Manuel D. Gerochi; committee coordinating secretariat; advisor; guests; and other members of the PCSD coordinating secretariat.
